Well... I have new and exciting information today!

Apparently these are showing up for the Windows clients when they log in.
It could very well be entirely unrelated.

The user 'AppData' preference item in the 'Default Staff
{D948A74A-B9A6-4AEC-B27A-49DBE7FD3B2E}' Group Policy object did not apply
because it failed with error code '0x80070005 Access is denied.' This error
was suppressed.
The user 'Documents' preference item in the 'Default Staff
{D948A74A-B9A6-4AEC-B27A-49DBE7FD3B2E}' Group Policy object did not apply
because it failed with error code '0x80070005 Access is denied.' This error
was suppressed.
The user 'Desktop' preference item in the 'Default Staff
{D948A74A-B9A6-4AEC-B27A-49DBE7FD3B2E}' Group Policy object did not apply
because it failed with error code '0x80070005 Access is denied.' This error
was suppressed.
The user 'Favorites' preference item in the 'Default Staff
{D948A74A-B9A6-4AEC-B27A-49DBE7FD3B2E}' Group Policy object did not apply
because it failed with error code '0x80070005 Access is denied.' This error
was suppressed.

top, iotop, and iftop show nothing unusual. I see network spikes, but they
usually coincide with large applications being loaded.

I did notice a whole lot of these:
    [2013/12/24 07:41:55.344959, 1]
../source3/smbd/service.c:550(make_connection_snum)
      create_connection_session_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
but they seem to coincide with nothing in particular.

I have been told: "svchost.exe (netsvcs) spikes to almost all of my
bandwidth when it hangs"
I've also been told that no cpu or page fault spikes happen during the
momentary hangs.

I don't think I offered anything useful so far... :(
