May we see your smb.conf, especially related to password?
ie. in [global] section:
        encrypt passwords =3D ...
        update encrypted =3D ...
        pam password change =3D ...
        passwd program =3D ...
        passwd chat =3D ...
        unix password sync =3D ...

Maybe you need to use the -U <username> option.
smbpasswd -U <username>
