[Samba] Joining a pdc: Invalid password length

Hi!

I tried to join a samba client to a samba pdc (tried Windows as well).
smbpasswd -U root -r server -j stuttgart
(stuttgart being the domain and server the netbios server name).
The operation fails with an acess denie message.

In the logs of the server I can see that the password check failed, and
the password length is incorrect.

However, the password I used for root is the root password on server and
the smbpassword for root on server.

Has anyone an idea, what could be the problem?
