ghost machines, revisited

Greetings.  I have asked about this in the past with no response. :(

I have a couple of networks, each with a linux box running samba 2.2.1a. 
  All SMB clients are pointed to a WINS server (currently one of the 
samba boxes) and cross-subnet browsing works fine.

Trouble is, both machines and workgroups remain in the browse lists 
forever whether they are online or not.

Any ideas as to why this occurs and how to eliminate it?
