cannot get access

I have installed Samba on my debia system by compiling the tarball. I can
browse the shares from my NT box but cannot get access even when I enter a
valid user. Looking at the diagnostics webpage, I may have a problem with
shadow passwords. It suggests compiling in support for them, but I cannot
see any way to do it in the ./compile --help info. Hwo do I support shadow
passwords.
