Novell

That is actually a pretty common problem. You probably will need to setup a Wins server in order to be able to browse the samba box from network neighborhood.

Can you connect if you do a Start ... Run... and type in \\servername\\sharename ?

  Daniel,

Thanks for the tip. My problem seems to be more than just that. My laptop is connected to a subnet that
is different that what the subnet on the samba server. Any ideas. I can ping to the server from the laptop
just fine. I decided to put the standard smb.conf file in the configuration that came with the distribution.
I still unable to get the server to come up in the laptop network neighborhood window.

Also I can ping my laptop from the server so it is not a routing issue. I also made sure that the workgroup
is set correctly to what I'm on.

Anybody with a hint. In case your all wondering what the configuration are:

Samba Server: Sun Ultra 2: Solaris 2.8
Network: 100 Base T VLAN Network.
The network domains are running on Novell Servers which version 4.11
Laptop has TCP/IP software and loaded and connect to the internet just fine.

I understand, the Sun Box is intended Samba server. I was suggesting that you run that smbclient command on the server machine itself to verify (without worrying about any connectivity issues) that Samba was running correctly on it. Doing this will show you what shares you have setup on the box. That way you can start to rule out the Samba configuration as the problem. You may want to post your smb.conf file as well, assuming nothing else works to see if there is anything funny about it.

Daniel, The samba server is the Sun Box. If I had another Sun Box to play with then yes, running the samba Client would do the trick. I think there was a little mix up in what I'm trying to do. Phillip B. Bruce, Manager

It sounds like the problem lies with the client setup more than the Sun/Samba setup. On the Sun box you should be able to do a:
        smbclient -U username -L \\sunboxhostname
and get a listing of the shares you have setup on the box. This will tell you if Samba is running at least somewhat OK.
On your laptop (running Windows of some sort) go into your network propertied (Control Panel, Network) and make sure you have TCP/IP loaded and configured properly. If they are running just netware clients they may only have IPX/SPX installed for a protocol. Once you are sure TCP/IP is loaded, make sure you can ping the Sun box from a client.

Then do a Start ... Run and run \\sunboxhostname\sharename and see what happens. A prompt for a password tells you at least that you got them talking.

If you still are not talking check your log.smb and log.nmb (where ever they are set to go mine go to either /var/log/samba/* or to /usr/local/samba/var/* depending on whether I used a precomiled version or compiled it myself.

If I am stating what is already obvious to you, I don't mean to sound like I am talking down to you. I'm just not sure what level you are at, and tend to default to the lower end.

Daniell, The network here comprises of Novell Servers. I have a Sun Box in which I'm wanting my Windows 95, 98, and NT users connect to. They are running Novell 4.11. I don't have problem with my Sun Box when on a LAN separate from the Novell Network. I've setup Samba as I normally but still don't see the system on my laptop.Phillip B. Bruce,Manager

What do you mean by putting it on a Novell Network? Are you going to try to make it work on a Netware box (I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that is a supported plateform).
If you are going to just run it on a Sun box that is on a lan that contains Netware servers as well, that should work fine. I run NT clients that connect just fine to both Netware servers and Samba servers.

        Hi,
I like to know if anyone has ever gotten samba to work on Sun Solaris on a
        Novell Network.
I don't have an issue with installation on Sun Solaris that works fine.
        But I've never put Samba
on a Novell Network Before. Please describe any steps or issue with this.
