password trouble

Hi,

I can connect with my server when I include the -Uusername%password option on the command line, but not when I get the >password prompt after giving the smbclient -L  command.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. the diagnose docs were very helpful, but I can't seem to find this eventuality.
