Win98 changing Samba password: encrypted or not?

It seems that I cannot change the samba's password with the control panel in
Win98 if I'm using plain text passwords. Is this correct?
With plain text passwords enabled, I see in the logs that when I try to
change the password in Win98's control panel Samba is trying to reach the
/etc/smbpasswd file. But with plain text passwords there is no such file,
it's only used for encrypted passwords, right?
Any help is appreciated!
