nt pipe support

I'm getting really confused.

I just added a Linux box to my network and copied the samba config files
from another linux box.

On the new box I have to have:
nt pipe support = yes

Otherwise I can't connect to the box with "security = domain".

On the old box I have:
nt pipe support = no

Plus...this appears to impact Windows 2000 also.  Is there any clarification
available for when one needs this?
