1.9.18alpha3 on same LAN as 1.9.17p2 ??

should be absolutely fine.  the issue with 1.9.16 mixed with 1.9.17 was 
if you had mis-configured your systems to attempt to provide two "domain 
master / pdcs" for the same workgroup.

this is only possible to do for two or more 1.9.17+ samba servers.
