Libpam problem

Howdy,
        I'm running Slackware v3 with ELF, I've successfully managed to compile the latest version of samba, when I try to run anything I get told that it can't find libpam.so.0, what is this? Is it something to do with Plugable Authentication Modules? What do I need to compile or install this library, and where do I find it?
    Also thanks to Jodok Sutterluety for helping me out with my compile problems
