security problem with 1.9.17p2

I've compiled from source on my SCO machine and cannot
get the security feature to work correctly. If I set security = server,
and password server = ntserver, I cannot connect to the samba server
at all.

With no security specified, I can connect and browse my "public" areas,
but cannot access the user home directory.

Debug set to 3 shows the following error which I don't understand:

I_STR/SIOCGIFCONF: Invalid argument

Can anyone shed some light on this?
