FHS defaults for samba4

Quoting the FHS:

These are not static, and are binary (if not executable), so I think we
are locked out of /etc (read-only root considerations).

Yep.  Now I just need a hand identifying where the defaults in
build/m4/check_path.m4 come from. 

I want to keep the --with-fhs option, which would be for package
builders, but I can't see where the defaults come from otherwise...
