remapping illegal file characters

Had to back out the mapping of backslash on the way out (since doing it 
globally would affect the UNC name passed on treeConnect) - eventually 
will fix this in a prettier patch - but wanted more immediate feedback 
on whether this solves the problem for the other characters (especially 
colon which seems to be causing users problems with e.g. evolution email 
client on cifs mounted homedirs
