What OS, file system and security are in use for the file being accessed?
(i.e. Win98, FAT, share-level security; Win2000, NTFS, user-level security,
etc. I believe from the above description that it's the latter, but please
specify.)

Please add a bug to SAMBA_3_0/libsmbclient at http://bugzilla.samba.org with
the above information and, if possible, an ethereal/tcpdump trace of the
session, and I'll look into it.
