Are you using plaintext passwords?  Are your password all-lowercase?  If
not, they you might need to up the 'password level' so samba's built in
password-cracker can find the right one.

Does your OS have limitations on password length?

In any case, move across to encrypted passwords as soon as possible - it
gets around all sorts of weird and wonderful issues like this.
