map hidden

"map hidden" and "map system" don't seem to allow explorer or attrib
to change these attributes.  if they are set at the filesystem, they
appear in explorer, but if i set them from explorer they are silently
ingored.  i saw that richard sharpe asked the same question back in
february, but i never found any responses.  is this the expected
behavior, or am i doing something wrong?  is there any way to get the
feature to work?
