i decided that if it really were broken, deja.com would have SOME
mention of it.  finding none, i turned back to the docs.  

"create mask", to me, implied creation, and since i was modifying, i
said "eh, that's not for me!"

it was.

the feature, with create mask = 0755, works like a charm.  thanks, and
sorry for the bone-headed question.
