	Absolutely, and it looks specific to development as 
	opposed to production compilers here...

	I just built on 2.6 i386 without errors, but
	failed on sparc 2.6: the only difference is
	the defaults cc assumes.

	Ditto on 2.6 and 2.7: any of -# -H or -xtime,
	if set, will report status information on
	stderr, thus rendering the tests invalid.

	We keep some su-able vanilla accounts available
	to diagnose the "let's change the site default"
	problem, and Samba built cleanly when I ran from
	one of them. 
	Sorry to have contributed to the confusion! 

	The other folks seeing similar mismatches may well
	be suffering from the same thing.
