I have a device like this for the ducks at my place.
It was a commercial solution though, as I did not have any time to build
one from scratch and wanted something reliable.

http://www.chookmanor.co.nz/automatic-coop-door-controller-acdc
(this is not where i purchased it from but it was the first result in my
search).

One day i will build a replacement, because for ducks they are useless and
do not go back into the coop at night by themselves.
I often forget to put them away before the door automatically shuts at
night so i have to manually open the door to get them in there.

I am also part of makehackvoid so posting on the forum there might be a
good idea.
