Yes (done).

What had happened:-
the download of packages for the automagical dist-upgrade had dropped
out. Graphical boot had failed.

What I did:-
made notes of everything
backed up user's settings and documents
backup up system configs and records
checked the BIOS, logs, checked the usual places for configurations that
bite during an upgrade, then checked lsmod, lspci, and dpkg
--get-selections to ensure that things "look OK" for the graphics (and
optimised the BIOS).
setup temporary networking and ssh
apt-get update&&apt-get -s upgrade|more
lots of packages to be upgraded
apt-get -s dist-upgrade|more
lots and lots of packages to be dist-upgraded
apt-get -yd dist-upgrade #downloaded dist-upgrade files
apt-get -y dist-upgrade #installed upgrade to Trusty
trimmed out unneeded packages (e.g. bluetooth)
apt-get --purge autoremove
apt-get --purge remove `deborphan` #more trimming
apt-get -d upgrade #downloaded upgraded packages
apt-get -y upgrade
rebooted
noted that the system reported a number of failures
in each failure instance I noted the file reported missing or failed to
execute and:-
apt-file search $MissingFile #and noted the parent package
apt-get -s install $ParentPackage #in each case the package was installed
dpkg-reconfigure $ParentPackage
rebooted - this time no failures
"Bit of a polish" (based on use case)
installed libdvdcss2 (as root ''/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh'')
installed VLC and mc
installed English_Australia dictionary into Firefox
installed Firefox extensions "It's All Text" (and configured it to use
Gedit) and Video MovieDownloader (owner wants to pull down YouTuber
videos without using a cli tool)
removed 8! older kernels and header packages ('that' trimmed the GRUB menu)
reduced GRUB pause time to 2 seconds (it's not a dual-boot box)
removed temporary networking configuration

Four hours on the bench, less at the keyboard (in an SSH session).

I hope that helps others

Kind regards
