I had the same problem a week ago.

How do you do those?

That seems like a good idea. I can't recall most of such tweaks.

How do you do that safely?

Having backed up Home to another disk, I eventually reinstalled Ubuntu 
12.04 LTS in the primary disk, wiping the latter.
