I suspect that your favourite bike shop is confused. That's more like
a Schmidt price. My Shimano, the DH-3N71 was about $160.

It's not rocket surgery. I have built up a few wheels following these
simple instructions:

The trick is to get the spoke length right for your hub, rim and
lacing configuration. Once I have something wheel-like, I take it to
an expert for a final tension and true-ing for not much cost.
