Things 'started working' after a power black-out & everything
reset/rebooted.
I'm currently thinking there is some sort of networking problem (arp
related?) with these older linux kernels that appears over time.
Like, but not, a memory leak ;-)
Wasn't the routing - I eventually did get that right & no joy.
Wasn't the ifconfig - after reboot "Just Worked".
Wasn't the switches - we replaced them completely & the problems persisted.
Thanks very much for all the help & suggestions from such a wide group
of people.
Much appreciated!
