I'm sure this dosn't help you very much but when I was a student at ANU
(2 years ago) the system work fine with my linux systems.

If it's not working now can I suggest you try:
 a) Install something like DownloadHelper:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
    In theory this will wade through the javascript etc etc and allow
    you to easily download the .ram (or .rpm) files
 b) If realplayer wont play them off disk then use mplayer to convert
    the realmedia into an mp3/ogg/flac/wav and play that.

Sure it's a pain and AFAICT a major regression on behalf of the ANU wide
information services staff, but it shouldn't be that hard to work around
it.
