I'd like confirm Paul's advice - you are probably going to get better results 
using "native" applications. On Simply Mepis, you are probably looking for an 
application named "k3b" (not sure exactly what the menu entry is called. It 
is a particularly good CD and DVD burning application.

In terms of installing new software, you can easily do this with your package 
management tool, which I think is going to be "synaptic" on Simply Mepis.
