I haven't found such a checkbox... :)  and I can assure you that my
experience with beryl/xgl is the same as yours on a T42 with an ATI
9600 and an X60!   -- much fiddling required.  There are a few good
howto's out there but still a pain.

I am yet to have success getting beryl/xgl to work under vmware,
although I think that this one is a lost cause even with the latest
vmware tools and drivers.
