I just bought a Canon EOS 30D digital SLR, it works with Linux (digiKam under 
KDE) straight out of the box. Usually, the camera will appear as a standard 
USB storage device.

I believe that the additional software that's usually shipped with a new 
camera is for post-processing kinda stuff. If you're going to be doing this, 
you can use GIMP or whatever tools you prefer.
