Last time I looked, there was no way of doing, for example "apt-cache  
show-changelog xyz-package" which would give me a list of the changes  
since my currently installed version - ie: a means to answer the  
question, "do I really need to upgrade this package?"

I agree with the usefulness of the single-tool software update  
process. In Mac OS X you end up having to open each application and  
select "check for updates" manually. In Windows, you browse a billion  
web sites to find updates for the software you know you've installed,  
hope you got the right update, then find you got a broken one which  
is six months old from some unmaintained mirror site...
