I presume you realise that AMD64 hardware can also run compiled-for-i386
Linux distributions?  It's the easier approach for "the desktop", where
alas non-free and non-portable software is still so prevalent.

(Depending on what you're doing, though, running in native AMD64 mode
can give a huge performance boost.)
