Hi all,

I promised to send Andrew an abstract, but it's been a busy week.

In summary, we have used the UMN Mapserver, R, Latex, Perl and
other things to create customised atlases based on Social Atlas
data. As well as allowing the user to select the extent and themes
to be included in their atlas, the map classifications and comparitive
plots are re-calculated for the selected exent. This means that it is
possible to see how the selected region compares nationally. I will
mostly focus on the how Mapserver generates vector PDF maps, and how
understanding this process was important in in keeping atlas PDFs
down to a practical size.

Cheers,

Antti Roppola
