As a few people have mentioned already, this really isn't something that
belongs in the kernel.  Doing it in user space will make your life much
simpler.

As far as writing daemons goes, get a copy of "Advanced Programming in
the UNIX Environment" by W. Richard Stevens.  It's a very good reference.
