Remote audio recording tool

Hi,

I'm looking for an audio recording tool that could be controlled remotely by
a php script or something like that.
So I guess a recording program that can run in the background or run as a
daemon would probably work fine.  I thought about using the program 'screen'
to remote control a general console audio recording program, but I'll only
use that method if there isn't something out there that can already do what
I want.
Has anyone seen any programs like this?
