In Debian the default time for running cron.daily is 0625, so it
maybe that something which occurs then is causing the problems.

Try moving the time for cron.daily in /etc/crontab and see if the problem
moves...

Other than that the other suggestion is to drop back to a 2.2.x kernel,
and/or hang around the console at the designated time to see what you
can see.
