But  I have this problem on more linux machines of varying ages, one 
running samba-2.0.6-7, another with samba-2.2.8a-107 and yet another 
with samba-3.0.9-2.6. The XP machine this occurred with I'm pretty sure 
is SP2.

So there doesn't seem to be any kind of generalisation I can make about 
them.
