Client is crashing?

What version of the kernel is SuSE 9.1, I don't think I have one of
those installed around here, although I do have plenty of more recent
SuSE.  There were some key fixes to the client that could avoid large
file client problems as you describe, and I have backported as far back
as to SuSE's 2.6.5 kernels,   For earlier kernels, smbfs may be your
only choice.
