You can see the actual smb requests that are sent (via dmesg), if you get 
that far, by 

        echo 1 > /proc/fs/cifs/traceSMB
then attempting the mount.

Note that cifs vfs for security reasons will not negotiate/send plaintext 
passwords or (weak) lanman password to the server, although smbfs usually 
can do that - so there are cases in which cifs vfs will legitimately fail 
to a server that smbfs can mount.
