Apple OS X SMB issues across VPN

Could I get some pointers from you guys on this? I have built other
packages from scratch but in this case I want to do it right. Given
that I have Apple's stock samba installed I would like to try to
minimize the damage to it.

Example:

All the stock files seem to be in

/usr/sbin/
/usr/share/
/usr/lib/

Now if I did a standard:

./configure
make
sudo make install

If I am correct everything should be dumped in /usr/local/ so I can
run a parallel install which is what I would like to do. All I need
is samba installed and a simple r/w share enabled for testing. If I
rebuild my Xserve's Samba install I am guessing it will be ugly given
the tie-in with Apple's Open Directory (LDAP) structure to provide
authentication for SMB users.

Is my build as simple as:

./configure
make
sudo make install

Thanks,

Dan T
