I'm using a modified an ex-Galaxy 24dBi Conifer dish, with a custom made
dipole, on an 8m mast, using an Enterasys RoamAbout wireless card.
I'm connecting to an AP which is 10.2km distant, which has a WaveLink 180
degree waveguide mounted on top of a commercial radio tower, and uses a
Orinocco RG500 wireless card.
I'm typically getting an SNR of about 10-11dB, and it's that low because
of the trees that I'm going through. On the other side of the trees,
using the same antenna, I've stumbled the AP with an SNR of about 20dB, so
I'm definitely losing a lot of signal through the trees, and when it
rains, I lose about 2dB.
Note that we have people connected to the Perth Freenet with 20km+ links,
using similar hardware.
