As far as I know, every manufacturer has a new and 802.11(a)
uncompatible version of WEP now, which is "safe" against the old
tools.

If it is safe NOW, you can't say, that it "is safe". If you want to
have a secure communication, you ALLWAYS should use VPN - not only on
wireless-links.
