hello,

i want to see the signal quality metrics for a few other devices/access
points. i understand i have to use ad-hoc mode in order to do that.

however, here's what happens:

sh-2.03# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

Warning : Device eth0 has been compiled with version 11
of Wireless Extension, while we are using version 12.
Some things may be broken...

eth0 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"Monica" Nickname:"familiar"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc Frequency:2.412GHz Cell: 00:60:1D:F1:20:CF
          Bit Rate:5.5Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3
          Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
          Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc:0

sh-2.03# iwspy eth0 + 00:60:1D:F1:20:CF
sh-2.03# cat /proc/net/wireless
Inter-| sta-| Quality | Discarded packets
face | tus | link level noise | nwid crypt misc
  eth0: 0000 0 0 0 0 0 0
sh-2.03#

also if i use managed mode, i get metrics, but they don't seem to change (?)
when i move around the office and hallways.
i get:
           Link Quality:159/92 Signal level:7/153 Noise level:0/153

the link quality value fluctuates sometimes changes a bit
between 158 and 160, but doesn't seem to correlate with moving
around (even if i go out of range so ping doesn't get through anymore.)

(i noticed the 11 vs 12 version discrepancy that iwconfig reports,
but by looking at the driver source this doesn't seem like
it would affect the iwconfig readings. also /proc/net/wireless reports
the same numbers.)

i am doing this on a ipaq. familiar 0.5 prerelease, kernel
2.4.7-rmk3-np1-devfs, orinoco_cs version 0.07.

any ideas greatly appreciated.

please cc me as i'm not subscribed to the list. (i read the archives
though)
