Thanks for the tip!  Both versions behave much better than 0.07 (the RedHat
default for kernel-2.4.9-21) or 0.09b (again the RedHat default for their
rawhide 2.4.9.17-0.18) or 0.10.  Version 0.08b is the better performing 
one.  Some minor remarks follow.

The drivers still make those buzzing sounds, and 0.09a also produces these
messages:
