For what it's worth: did you try the 2 different settings for password 
encryption ? I don't know the default setting for a Windows 2000 client, 
but I guess Windows 2000 clients pass their smb- passwords encrypted. 
However, if your samba server doesn't count on getting the passwords 
encrypted, then you may never have success.

I don't know which settings you already tried before, but in your case, 
I think this password encryption issue might be the good one.

Note however that a lot of other possibilities are still open...
