windows username and password

Hi to everyone,
I've got a problem with a Linux samba server: I'd like to protect some shares 
with a couple username/password, but when I try to access the share from a 
windows machine (win 98,XP) it doesn't allow to set the username, and present 
a fixed username like "\192.168.1.14\guest". The security level of the server 
is set to share, but I can't understand why it doesn't allow to me to set the 
username. Does anybody know why?
