Rowland,

We are in the business of integration and interoperability.

We don't tell our users to ask MS for help with Samba because we don't
build Windows, and on the flip side why would sssd-users be more
suitable for a Samba question.

Much better is to help as far as we can, write wiki pages to clarify
what keeps coming up in questions and what folks make work, and be
willing to say 'I don't know' or 'we can only help so far', rather than
'don't even ask this here'.

But even more important is just to be welcoming to our users. We might
personally question those, but we should always start our assistance
from the mindset of 'from where you are now, how can I help you best'.

We said here:
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/How_to_do_Samba:_Nicely#Answering_questions

"While we may chuckle at how much our users think needs to be
configured, where possible try to help our users while keeping the
unrelated settings that are otherwise working for them. "

In this context this could also be paraphrased as "While we may chuckle
at why our users try to integrate/coexist samba with sssd, where
possible try to help our users while keeping the existing environment
as unchanged as possible, where that is otherwise working for them. "

That mindset is important, and will make this list a much nicer place.

Thank you for your understanding,
