[Samba] backup retention best practices

I'm looking for advice on devising a best practices guide for backup 
retention of file servers, app servers, and desktops.  I realize this is 
a broad topic, and each company or individual has their own policies or 
best practices. What is your opinion on a good retention rate for each 
of those three areas, would you please share your retention rates?
