In this instance the backslash '\' is being used as an escape character, 
so that the " can be printed, but it shouldn't be printed itself. It 
could be removed from Louis's script by replacing `\"` with `'`.

You should have fixed this in your PDF and advised Louis of the fix.

But hey, Louis is happy and that is all that really matters.
