From the 4.8.0 release notes:

Domain member setups require winbindd
Setups with "security = domain" or "security = ads" require a running
'winbindd' now. The fallback that smbd directly contacts domain
controllers is gone. 

I wonder if  unintentionally this means winbindd has to run on all
servers ?

Let me get back to you on this after I have set up new standalone
server.
