Samba AD uses LDAP. If you are determined, you could probably do that, but my
personal experience with automatic 3-to-4 migration is negative, with idmap
issues being the primary source of frustration.
My original domain was created back before 2008 and idmap range was set very
low, which became an issue several years later, when login.defs defaults were
changed and upgrade to 3.6 happened, and turned into a mess, when converting
domain into AD.
