Either is a possibility, but, if you are only running a test domain,
then starting anew is probably the easiest way.

If you do upgrade, do it like this:

download and unpack the new tarball
then run configure: ./configure
Then compile it: make
Stop Samba
Install the new packages: make install
Start Samba

I would also check here (whichever way you decide to go):

There are dependencies show there that are not on the howto you posted.
